Google now books hotels inside AI Mode. What it means for an independent hotel

On 27 August 2026 Google started letting travellers in the US book hotels without leaving AI Mode. Who the launch partners are, why Europe is excluded for now, and what an independent property should do this winter.

On 27 August 2026 Google announced hotel booking inside AI Mode, the conversational version of Google Search. A traveller describes the trip, sees a visual list of hotels with guest reviews and the factors that matter to them, and can complete the booking with Google Pay without leaving the conversation.

Here is what was actually announced, what it changes, and what it does not.

What Google launched

  • Where: rolling out in the United States, in English.
  • With whom: the launch partners named by Google are Booking.com, Choice Hotels, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham.
  • Who sells the room: the hotel or booking platform is the merchant of record. It charges the card, sends the confirmation and handles changes and customer service. Google provides the conversation and the payment step.
  • Not in Europe yet: Google’s note says the booking features exclude EEA countries and territories.

The same announcement added flight price tracking and loyalty points and miles rates to AI Mode.

What it means for an independent hotel

1. Today, you reach this booking flow through an OTA. None of the launch partners is a channel an independent hotel controls directly, other than through its listings on Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline or Trip.com. If a US guest books you inside AI Mode this winter, it will almost certainly be through one of those, with their commission.

2. Being recommended still comes first. The booking button only appears after AI Mode has chosen which hotels to show. That choice draws on Google’s own data about your property (your Business Profile, reviews, photos, prices) and on pages across the web. Booking inside AI Mode raises the value of being on that shortlist; it does not change how you get on it.

3. Your Google Business Profile matters more than ever. Gemini, Google’s assistant, also says it draws real-time information from Google Maps, Flights and Hotels when it plans trips. For accommodation, the data Google already holds about you is the data its assistants work with. A complete, current profile, with recent replies to reviews, is the cheapest improvement available.

4. Europe has time, not immunity. The EEA exclusion reflects regulation, not lack of interest. Assume a European version will follow in some form and use the time to fix the basics.

What to do this winter

  1. Audit your Google Business Profile. Category, address and map pin, phone, website, opening hours of reception, photos from this year, attributes (parking, pool, pets, accessibility).
  2. Reply to every Google review from the last twelve months. Specific, calm, with facts the next guest can use.
  3. Make your OTA listings agree with your website. Room names, sizes, policies, what breakfast includes. Contradictions make assistants hesitate.
  4. Check that Google can include you. In Search Console, Settings → Search generative AI should be set to include your site (the default).
  5. Measure where you stand. Ask AI Mode the questions your guests ask and note whether you appear. Or ask us: the free AI Visibility Check does this across twenty questions and four assistants.
